A baby elephant was reportedly crying at the sight of its dead mother. It’s uncertain whether this was merely out of emotion or if the little elephant tried to wake his mother up with the tears. Maybe even hydrate her? This is all very speculative, but it seems like in this case, an animal cried and was heavily emotional.
The problem is that we can’t really conduct this type of experiment without being cruel or extremely lucky. We have to put the animal in a situation that would make them very emotional. Most animals don’t have the brain functions to associate concepts with their own lives.
For example, people may cry while watching a sad movie because their brains recognize the tragedy and are capable of both making that connection and ignoring that the situation isn’t real. Other living beings can’t really do that to such an extent
